Best Eco/Vegan Movies to Binge Watch

Best Eco/Vegan Movies to Binge Watch
Heather Nicholds, C.H.N.

This is Easter weekend, for those of us who live in the Christian-oriented parts of the world. That means a “holiday” long weekend – but it doesn’t feel all that much like a holiday this year, does it?

Having spent a lot of time lately watching videos on social media and on netflix, I thought it would be fun to share some environmental and/or vegan films so we can get inspired while we binge watch.

(Though I totally get it if you want to go for a distraction from reality instead!)

Here are some that have really resonated with me:

Mission Blue

This is a story following Dr. Sylvia Earle, who is a bad-ass female trailblazer in marine biology, and her mission to try and save the world’s reefs and oceans. Despite seeing first-hand the reef degradation around the world, she stays hopeful and focused on solutions.

Before the Flood

Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, who is a dedicated environmentalist, this is pretty compelling in motivating you to want to make a difference.

Our Planet

Planet Earth, Blue Planet, now Our Planet. If there’s anyone who can remind us all of how beautiful and interconnected our ecosystem is, it’s David Attenborough.

Cowspiracy

From the perspective of the planet, raising cows for food is so detrimental. This film explores all the myriad of ways that animal agriculture impacts our planet – so of which might surprise you!

An Inconvenient Truth

This film, which follows Al Gore as he gave a talk across the world about climate change, is what set me on the path of doing everything I possibly could to reduce my impact on the planet. That soon led me to going vegetarian, and then vegan. And now there’s a sequel, too!

Blackfish

Following an orca, and how captivity affects him and his species. The happy ending is that since the film was made, places that keep orcas and dolphins are being shut down.

Okja

This is a super cute, super sweet story about a girl and her friend, with strong messages about animals and the environment weaved in.

Earthlings

Narrated by Joaquin Pheonix, who has been vegan since he was about 6 years old, this is a striking film showing the cruelty we inflict on animals. It took me a long time since going vegan to watch this, and when I finally did, I cried pretty much the whole way through, but I’m so glad I did.

Chasing Ice

Being able to actually see the changes in the ice over years, condensed into a film, is so powerful. Beautiful and heartbreaking. There’s a similar film, called Chasing Coral, which I’ve started but keep crying and haven’t made it through yet.

Here are some that are super popular (though I haven’t watched them quite yet):

The Game Changers

Seems to be inspiring more guys than usual to go vegan.

H.O.P.E.

Jane Goodall is one of my heroes, so I’m looking forward to watching this. And hope is exactly what we need to get motivated to create change!

Forks Over Knives

Explores the health benefits of eating plants.
